On Thursday Netflix reported earnings for the second quarter of 2024 and beat consensus estimates across several metrics including total memberships, revenue, and earnings per share. The company raised its projects for full year revenue growth on the back of these strong results. Still, shares traded lower amid concerns around revenue in upcoming quarters as any boost from last year’s password sharing crackdown fades. Additionally, Netflix’s decision to stop reporting on subscriber numbers in 2025 has raised concerns about opacity and left the market looking for metrics to understand the state of the streaming business.

The Max (formerly HBO Max) “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon,” Amazon’s twisted superhero series “The Boys” and Netflix hits “Stranger Things” and “Bridgerton” are among the most in-demand TV series featured in the 2024 Guinness World Records. Being “in-demand” is a metric developed by TV data firm Parrot Analytics, which measures several factors including which shows are attracting high-value customers to a streaming service, which series are retaining high-risk customers for the streaming service, as well as which series are acquiring customers at the lowest cost. Parrot Analytics partnered with the latest edition of the Guinness World Records to highlight the most in-demand shows in genres such as comedy, drama and romance across the world between Jan. 31, 2022 and Jan. 30, 2023.

The week of May 20 - 26 saw The Flash become the most in-demand show in the U.S. with 89.4 times more demand than the average series. The Flash dethroned Spongebob Squarepants, which had 83.9 times the demand average, after a 24% surge in audience attention pushed it up the ranking. After almost a decade of being on air, The CW superhero show bid farewell to fans with its series finale on May 24 as it concluded its story. Meanwhile, South Park and HBO’s Game of Thrones retained their positions in the ranking in third and fourth place for yet another week. While South Park did see a 5% decline in demand this week, Game of Thrones was observed to have a minor 2% increase.

In the U.S. for the week of May 13 - 19, while the top five positions in the overall ranking remained unchanged, we did see a little bit of movement among the bottom five shows and also noted a new entrant in the ranking. The Flash remained in second place, just behind Spongebob Squarepants with 83.9 times the average series demand. While it had the same position in the ranking, the DC series did have a 5% increase in demand, staying high up on the chart as predicted last week.

In the U.S. for the week of May 06 - 12, while the top three positions in the overall shows ranking remained unchanged, the rest of the shows in the ranking did see some movement. Spongebob Squarepants topped the ranking for yet another week with almost the same level of demand as last week, 86.2 times the average. The Flash also stayed in second place with 68.2 times the average series demand, a minor 1% increase from last week. We expect the show to remain high up in the ranking as it heads closer to its series finale on May 24.
