Germany genre and subgenre preferences
- Germany was one of three markets in this report where the action genre made up a larger than 30% share of demand in 2023.
- The 41.1% share of demand for comedy in Germany was above the global share of demand for comedy in 2023 – 40.2%.
- Biographical content has struggled to catch on in Germany where it only accounts for a 2.0% share of demand for all series. This is the smallest share of demand for this genre in this report and below the global share of demand for biographical content (2.5%).
- Paranormal content punches above its weight in Germany where it accounted for 3.4% of demand in 2023. This is well above the 1.0% share of titles that the paranormal subgenre makes up.
- Pre-school age children’s content made up 2.2% of demand for all series in Germany in 2023. This is the lowest share of demand for this subgenre of markets in this report.
- Germany was the only market in this report where the late-night talk show genre accounted for more than 1% of demand in 2023. 1.2% of demand for shows was for a late-night talk show indicating particular interest in this genre in Germany.
Germany originals share of demand and demand distribution
- CBS content made up a larger share of demand for shows in Germany than it did globally (5.7% compared to 4.4%). This is an improvement for CBS original content, which made up a 5.3% share of demand in 2022.
- Germany was one of the top three markets in this report in terms of demand for BBC content. Series from BBC made up 4.3% of demand for all series in this market, behind only Australia and the UK.
- Content from The CW resonated with audiences in Germany this year. These shows accounted for 2.7% of demand, a larger share than in any other market in this report.
- Netflix’s The Witcher ranked higher in Germany than in any other market in this report. The show had 17.1 times the average series demand for the year.
- Riverdale concluded its seven-season run in August. With 12.1 times the average series demand for the year, the show ranked higher in Germany than in any other market in this report and is an example of popular content from The CW in this market driving high demand for the channel.
- The Voice of Germany was the most in-demand reality series in Germany in 2023. The show is the local version of the global The Voice franchise which has spawned numerous successful adaptations in countries around the world.

Germany genre and subgenre preferences
- Germany’s 13.1% share of demand for animated content was above the global share of demand for the genre (12.4%) and was the second largest in this report.
- With a 1.1% share of demand for the year, Germany had the lowest demand for the horror genre in this report.
- Germany was among the five most comedy-loving markets we covered. Its 14.6% share of demand for the comedy genre was above the global share of demand for comedy (13.8%).
- Germany was one of three markets in this report where anime was the most in-demand subgenre of 2022, along with Brazil and France.
- Crime drama came incredibly close to being the most in-demand subgenre in Germany for the year. Total demand for crime dramas was only 1% lower than top ranked Japanese animation.
- Competition reality ranked as the eighth most in-demand subgenre in Germany. This was its highest rank in this report, which it also achieved in the UK and Mexico.
Germany originals share of demand and demand distribution
- CBS content made up a larger share of demand for shows in Germany than it did globally (5.3% compared to 4.5%). CBS ranked behind only Netflix in Germany in terms of its share of demand.
- Germany was one of the top three markets in this report in terms of demand for BBC content. Series from BBC made up 4.4% of demand for all series in this market, behind only Australia and the UK.
- Original series from Tokyo MX made up a 2.7% share of demand in Germany, greater than the 2.2% share of demand globally for this channel’s shows. This highlights the popularity of Japanese anime in Germany.
- The long-running children’s series Die Sendungmit der Maus was the most in-demand local production in Germany for 2022. It ranked as the eleventh most in-demand series and had 17.29 times the average series demand.
- The German soap opera Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten, from RTL, originally aired in 1992 but has held upwell over time. In 2022 it still had 8.52 times the average series demand.
- Germany was one of the most comedy-loving markets in this report. Local comedies like Die Dreisten Drei-Die Comedy-WG, which had 10.87x demand in 2022, helped the genre to capture a larger share of audience attention in this market.

Germany Genre and Subgenre Preferences for Series
- German audiences gave the largest share of demand to drama series in Q1 2022. However, the 35.4% share of demand for this genre was below its global share of demand (39.3%).
- Germany was one of the most reality-loving markets in this report, giving a 12.2% share of demand to the genre for the quarter.
- Horror content was notably unpopular in Germany where it accounted for under a 1% share of demand for all series in Q1 2022.
- Crime drama ranked as the most in-demand subgenre in Germany for the quarter. It was the top subgenre in five of the markets in this report.
- A love of competition reality helped drive high demand for the reality genre in Germany. Competition reality ranked as the 8th most in-demand subgenre for the quarter.
- Germany was one of four markets covered in this report where thriller ranked in the top ten most in-demand subgenres.
Germany Originals Share of Demand and Demand Distribution
- Netflix originals made up the largest share of original demand in Germany in Q1 2022. The 8.6% of demand German audiences gave to the platform’s originals for the quarter was below the global share of demand for the platform’s originals (10.4%).
- Content from CBS was uniquely successful in Germany this quarter where it made up the second largest share of demand for originals with 5.5%.
- Discovery content achieved one of its largest demand shares in Germany this quarter with 2.4%. Discovery branded content’s strength in the reality genre appealed to German audiences who are fans of the genre
- The Witcher was the most in-demand show in Germany in Q1 2022 with 25.45 times the average series demand in Q1 2022 following its second season premiere on December 17, 2021.
- Germany’s Next Topmodel, from ProSieben, was the most in-demand reality series in Germany this quarter when it had 17.54 times the average series demand.
- Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the police comedy from FOX, has found fans in Germany. In 19th place, it ranked higher in Germany than in any other market covered in this report.

Germany digital original genre and subgenre preferences
- German audiences gave their greatest share of demand for digital originals in the drama genre in 2021. The genre’s 47.1% share of demand here is below its global share of demand–48.3%.
- The share of demand for comedy originals in Germany fell year-on-year. In 2021, 14% of demand for original series was for a comedy compared to 16% last year.
- As with many markets covered in this report, the share of demand for animated original content in Germany increased in 2021 (to 6.5% from 4% in 2020)
- Germany was one of the four markets in this report where sci-fi drama was the most in-demand digital original subgenre for the year. It just edged out superhero series, which had only 3% less demand for the year.
- Teen drama ranked higher in Germany than in any other market in this report as the 7th most in-demand subgenre in 2021.
- Germany was the only market in this report where action fantasy ranked among the ten most in-demand subgenres for the year.
Germany platform demand share and digital originals demand distribution
- In Germany, demand for Netflix originals accounted for 47.6% of demand for all digital originals in 2021. This is the platform’s second largest share in this report, but a decrease from where it was in Germany in 2020–52.9%.
- Apple TV+’s share of demand in the German market has visibly ballooned over the course of 2021, increasing almost each month of the year and ending in December at an 8.2% share of demand for original series.
- 2021 was also a huge year for Disney+, whose demand growth kicked off in October 2020 with season 2 of The Mandalorian and never slowed down. However, Disney+ was unable to overtake Amazon PrimeVideo’s share of demand for the year in Germany.
- The Mandalorian was the most in-demand original series in Germany this year, with 19.03 times the average series demand. Space themed series are popular in Germany. Star Wars: Visions and For All Mankind ranked higher in Germany than in any other market in this report.
- The fantasy genre also captures the attention of German audiences. The Witcher and Shadow and Bone ranked higher here (8th and 28th respectively) than in any other market in this report.
- Druck, the German adaptation of Skam franchise, performs consistently well in Germany where it had 7.77 times the average series demand for the year and ranked as the 25th most in-demand digital original.
Germany platform demand share for drama and action/adventure digital originals
- Netflix maintained a share of demand for original dramas in Germany (55.8%) above its share of global demand for dramas (51.3%). However, starting in June 2021 Netflix’s share of drama demand began to decline steeply and it finally fell below 50% in November 2021 when it hit 48.3%.
- Hulu’s demand share of original dramas hit a two year high in October 2021 when it reached a 10.7% share of demand in the genre, boosted by the strength of several new original dramas including Nine Perfect Strangers.
- HBO Max original dramas struggled to catch on in Germany this year. The platform’s 3.0% share of demand for original dramas was tied with the US as the lowest in this report.
- Netflix had one of the largest demand shares for original action/adventure content in Germany in this report. With a 28.8% share of demand in the action/adventure genre Netflix had a larger demand share only in the US.
- There is strong demand in Germany for Star Trek content from Paramount+. The platform’s action/adventure originals accounted for a 5.1% share of demand in the genre here.
- Netflix’s share of demand for action/adventure originals reached a high point this year in December when the platform’s originals accounted for 36.2% of demand for all original action/adventure series. It just barely overtook Disney (which had a 36.0% share) in December.

Germany Digital Original Genre and Subgenre Preference
- Germans had the third highest demand share for digital original children’s content in this report. In Q2 2021 5.0% of demand for digital originals in Germany was for a children’s series.
- Germany was one of only three markets in this report that had a share of demand for original documentary content above 5%.
- While the share of demand for animated content in Germany in Q2 2021 is equal to the global share for this genre (6.0%), eight of the markets in this report have a higher share of demand for animated content.
- As with five markets in this report, superhero series was the most in-demand subgenre in Germany in Q2 2021. It had the narrowest lead over sci-fi drama here with only 1% more demand for the quarter.
- Germany is tied with Russia in this report for the market where fantasy drama ranks highest. Fantasy drama was the 7th most in-demand subgenre in Germany in Q2 2021.
- Germany is one of two markets in this report where teen drama ranked among the top 10 subgenres for the quarter. This was helped by high demand for the local teen drama, Druck.
Germany Platform Demand Share and Digital Originals Demand Distribution
- At just under 50%, Netflix had the third largest share of demand for originals in Germany of all markets in this report.
- Amazon Prime Video’s 10.6% share of demand for digital originals in Germany was larger than only two other markets in this report.
- The demand share in Germany for originals from Apple TV+ has had an impressive growth streak, increasing each month from its share in December 2020 (4.1%).
- The most in-demand digital original series in Germany in Q2 2021 is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. For the quarter it had 20.8 times the demand of the average series.
- Apple TV+’s The Me You Can’t See ranked higher in Germany than any of the markets covered in this report. It was the 24th most in-demand original series with nearly 8 times the average series demand.
- The Underground Railroad from Amazon Prime Video also ranked more highly in Germany than in any other market in this report as the 33rd most in-demand digital original series.
Germany Platform Demand Share for Drama & Action/Adventure Digital Originals
- In Germany, 60.7% of demand for digital original dramas was for a Netflix drama. This is Netflix’s second largest share of demand for dramas in this report.
- Local platform, Funk, was able to carve out a 1.4% share of demand for original drama series in Germany in Q2 2021. The platform’s demand share here has ebbed this quarter as the next season of its most in-demand drama, Druck, is not scheduled to premiere until October 2021.
- Amazon Prime Video originals made up 10.9% of demand for original dramas in Germany this quarter. This is one of the smallest shares for this platform’s dramas in this report.
- The share of demand for Paramount+ originals in Germany has historically outperformed other markets due to the popularity of its Star Trek franchise here. This quarter however the platform’s 3.9% share of demand for action/adventure originals trailed five other markets in this report.
- Germany was one of three markets in this report where the share of demand for Amazon Prime Video action/adventure originals fell below 10% this quarter.
- Netflix achieved its second largest share of demand for action/adventure originals in this report in Germany. 27.7% of all demand for action/adventure originals was for a Netflix series in Q2 2021.

Germany digital original genre and subgenre preferences
- German audiences expressed the highest share of demand for digital originals in the drama genre in 2020. At 48.1% demand share this is slightly above average for countries in this report.
- Germany has a close to average share of demand for the action adventure genre with 16.8%. However, this market saw one of the largest increases in demand for action/adventure originals this year, up from 13.2% in 2019.
- Germany has an above average share of demand for reality digital originals and a below average share for horror digital originals. These genres have a 3.4% and 2.4% demand share respectively.
- Sci-fi drama is the most in-demand subgenre in Germany for 2020. Crime drama overtook superhero series to become the 2nd most in demand in Germany this year.
- Teen drama is the 7th most in-demand subgenre in Germany. This is similar to Italy where it was 6th most in-demand. The result in both countries is likely helped by the popularity of local versions of the teen drama Skam (Druck in Germany and Skam Italia in Italy).
- Germany is one of three markets, with Italy and Brazil, where fantasy drama ranked most highly as the 9th most in-demand subgenre.
Germany platform demand share and digital originals demand distribution
- In Germany, demand for digital originals from Netflix accounted for 52.9% of demand for all digital originals in 2020.
- German audiences have an above average demand for digital originals from CBS All Access with 5.3% share for 2020. CBS’s Star Trek franchise is consistently popular in this market.
- The 24 month chart shows how demand for Netflix originals has held up fairly well in 2020 compared to other markets. In December 2020 the platform had a 50% demand share which is on par with its share following Disney+ and Apple TV+’s launch at the end of 2019.
- The Mandalorian is the most in-demand digital original series in Germany in 2020. It has 24.3 times the demand of the average show.
- With 12.9 times the demand of the average series, CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Picard is the fourth most in-demand digital original in Germany for 2020. This reflects the popularity of the Star Trek franchise in Germany.
- In Germany, Hulu’s original series High Fidelity achieved a higher rank than any market in this report. It is the 26th most in-demand digital original here with 5.9 times the demand of the average series.
Germany platform demand share for drama & action/adventure digital originals
- With a 60.2% share of demand for drama digital originals in Germany, Netflix accounted for a majority of demand in this category in 2020. Germany was one of four markets in this report where Netflix had a larger than 60% share here.
- In Germany, Apple TV+ has one of the smallest shares of demand for drama originals with a 4.4% share.
- Despite the fluctuations in Netflix’s demand share this year, its average for the year, 60.2% was nearly equal to its share in 2019, 60.5%. This shows that Netflix has stood up to increased competition well in Germany.
- In Germany, Netflix originals have a 31.0% demand share in the action/adventure genre in 2020. This number is slightly below the average of markets in this report.
- Of the markets in this report, Germany had the highest share of demand for action/adventure originals from CBS All Access. The newest series in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Picard, was the 4th most in-demand digital original for the year in Germany.
- Last year, Disney+’s demand share in Germany was one of the highest of markets we looked at. This year, its 20.5% demand share is only average.

• Reality series also occupy a large segment of audience attention this quarter. 12% of demand this quarter is for a reality title.

• Compared to global audiences, Germans are 2% less likely to express demand for drama series.
