Thailand genre and subgenre preferences for series
- The romance genre was especially popular with audiences in Thailand. The genre accounted for 29.5% of demand for shows in Thailand (the largest in this report) and was significantly above the global share of demand for this genre (19.1%).
- The crime genre struggled to resonate with Thai audiences, accounting for only 15.9% of demand which is the crime genre’s lowest share of demand in this report.
- The music genre also broke through with audiences in Thailand. The 7.7% share of demand in this market for the music genre was the second largest in this report and above the global share of demand for music series (5.7%).
- LGBTQI+ content overperforms in Thailand. These shows accounted for 7.5% of demand here in Q3 2024, which is a larger share for this subgenre than any other market in this report.
- Sitcoms had their lowest share of demand in Thailand in this report. Only 3.5% of demand was for a sitcom, making Thailand the only market in this report where the share of demand for the sitcom subgenre underperformed it’s supply share (4.4%).
- Demand for medical shows in Thailand also underperformed this subgenre’s supply share. Only 0.9% of demand for shows in this market was for a medical series.
Thailand originals share of demand and demand distribution
- Original content from GMM 25, a local Thai broadcaster accounted for 4.5% of demand for shows in Thailand and ranked second in terms of demand share behind only Netflix.
- Other local channels like Channel 3, Channel 7, and One 31 also ranked among the top 15 channels in terms of demand, underscoring the availability and popularity of locally made content in this market.
- The success of local content here has put the squeeze on the demand for imported content from channels like NBC which had a smaller share of demand in Thailand than any other market in this report (2.3%).
- Duang Jai Thewaphrom, from Channel 3, premiered in March this year and was the most in-demand local series in Thailand in Q3 2024, ranking third for the quarter.
- Masterchef Thailand, the local adaptation of the globally popular franchise from Channel 7, has won over audiences in Thailand where it ranked as the eighth most in-demand show for the quarter.
- My Stand-in is a local Thai drama from iQIYI that premiered earlier this year. The show still had high demand in Q3 when it ranked as the 14th most in-demand show in Thailand.
