The Flash became the most in demand TV series in the U.S. for the week of June 10 - 16 after a 13% increase in demand boosted the series up the charts with 78 times more demand than the average series in the U.S. this week. It should be noted that the majority of this increase in demand tracks with the release of The Flash movie which premiered on June 15. The overwhelmingly negative response to the movie though seems to have worked in favour of the show, which aired its series finale on May 24. In the meantime Spongebob Squarepants had a sharp 28% decline, sliding to second place this week with 62.6 times the average series demand.
Most shows in the overall and streaming original rankings actually had significant declines in demand this week, which underscores how quickly audience attention can shift to new and different content. Game of Thrones and Sesame Street both rose up to take third and fourth place this week, despite a minor 1% and 2% slump in demand. Following the drop in demand for Spongebob, the next show in the ranking to have the biggest decline was South Park, as it slid down to sixth place thanks to a 13% drop in demand.
AMC’s The Walking Dead made a comeback in the ranking this week. The show had a minor increase in demand that seems to have come ahead of the spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead’s mid-season finale, which is set to air on June 18. The spike could also be due to some pre-release excitement among the fandom ahead of the new show, The Walking Dead: Dead City’s premiere on June 18 as fans revisited the original series to refresh their memory in preparation for new content from the series.
Stranger Things, Ted Lasso and The Mandalorian had a notable downturn in demand this week but still managed to retain their positions in first, second and third place each. Manifest, which was the best performing streaming original last week, had one of the biggest drops in demand as the series fell to tenth place with a 21% decline in demand this week.
The Witcher had a 5% spike in demand this week after Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey took the stage in Brazil for Netflix’s annual global fan event Tudum, a few days ago. The increase boosted the series up to take fourth place in the ranking with 37.2 times the average series demand. Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds had the biggest surge in demand after its second season premiered on June 15. Although it’s only one episode in, the second season looks promising for the show in terms of audience demand, which increased by 53% post-premiere, making 33.4 times more in demand than the average series in the U.S. for the week.
The bottom four positions were all taken over by Netflix, with I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson remaining in seventh place with 33.1 times the demand average (+5%), You in eighth place with 32.8 times the demand average (+7%) and Black Mirror coming in ninth place with 31.1 times more demand than the average series, a 37% increase in demand compared to last week. The bigger spike in demand for Black Mirror makes sense considering that the show returned to screens after nearly 4 years with a new season on June 15. It remains to be seen if this is the highest demand the cult-favorite series will have for this season, or if we’ll see a further increase next week as more fans catch up to all the new episodes.
