United States genre and subgenre preferences

  • The share of demand for reality shows in the US in Q3 2024 was up slightly from last quarter (19.8%). Americans gave the largest share of demand to the reality genre in this report.
  • While drama is still the largest in terms of share of demand within the US, its dominance here is less compared to other markets. The US was the only market in this report where the genre accounted for less than 50% of demand across all series.
  • Documentary content also excelled in the US where it accounted for 13.9% of demand for all series, the largest share of demand for this genre in this report.

  • The true crime subgenre is a particular subgenre driving Americans’ high demand for documentary series. 2.3% of demand for shows was for a true crime series – higher than in any other market in this report.
  • The politics subgenre accounted for a lower share of demand in the US than other markets in this report. Not only does this subgenre account for a smaller share of demand relative to other markets, demand for political content in the US has been trending down in recent years.
  • The share of demand for celebrity content in the US (1.5%) was larger than any other market in this report, driven in part by the popularity of celebrity reality and variety series here.

  • Netflix originals accounted for the largest share of demand across platforms in the US. The 9.5% share of demand for a Netflix series has risen throughout this year.
  • Content from NBC drove 5.5% of demand for series in the US, ranking second in terms of demand share behind Netflix. This is a larger share of demand for NBC content than in any other market in this report.
  • BBC originals accounted for 2.4% of demand for all series in the US in Q3 2024. This is a smaller share of demand for BBC content than in any other market in this report.

  • HBO’s House of the Dragon aired its season 2 finale on August 4th, and ranked as the most in-demand show in the United States (as well as many other markets) in Q3 2024.
  • The classic sitcom, Seinfeld, reached its highest rank in the US this quarter where it was the 61st most in-demand show. In fact this was the only market in this report where the show ranked in the top 100 series by demand, a testament to the longevity of this series in the US.
  • Game Changer, a panel game show from the streamer, Dropout, ranked among the 100 most in-demand shows in the US and higher here than in any other market in this report.
