Netflix gives a first look at Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II from The Crown

30 July, 2021

Fans of The Crown are getting a first look at Imelda Staunton as she prepares for her turn as Queen Elizabeth II on the fifth season. Staunton is taking over from Academy Award winner Olivia Colman in the penultimate season. The actress best known for her portrayal of Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter and for her Oscar-nominated performance in 2004’s Vera Drake will depict the Queen during the 90s until 2003.

This was a particularly eventful era for the royal family and could provide several plotlines for the upcoming season. Deadline reports that one of the storylines will be drawn from the infamous BBC Panorama interview which gained attention recently as questions were raised about reporter Martin Bashir’s unethical practices in securing the exclusive. During this period Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York divorced as did Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips. Princess Diana and Prince Charles separated in 1992, and eventually divorced in 1996.
